Hi Sharon and Mitch,
Today is June 20th. I see you posted some fishing photos. Looks like you’re off to another great season. Keep up the great work!

My son and I just got back from another great fishing trip at Pinesunset Lodge. It looks like the summer weather pattern has kicked in with the past weeks temps running in the low eighties each day with only light rain on Wednesday night. Main lake water temps rose from the upper fifties at the beginning of the week to the upper sixties by weeks end. Some the bays had water temps up to seventy four degrees. All species except Perch were biting aggressively. As always Mitch and Sharon’s hospitality were second to none.

Looking forward to our first trip to Pine Sunset Lodge on August 1st through 8th, 2009. Our group has heard lots of good things and found great information on the website. Just wondering if anyone had any reports on the fishing this summer and/or helpful hints. Thanks!

Fishing on Dinorwic the past two weeks has been nothing short of fantastic. Promoting CPR for several years on all walleye over 18 inches is paying off. There have been a record number of walleye over 18″ caught and released this year and plenty under for eating and take home. The northern fishing has been better the past as well. Several pike caught in the slot and a few over. There have not been any muskie reported since the season opened early this week. Perch are still scattered with the walleye and the monster small mouth are on almost every rock shelf.
There have been reports of catching fish on absolutely anything. The walleye on pike lures, the pike on walleye rigs…. so there is no wrong way to fish Dinorwic Lake.

We too are looking forward to our first trip to Pine Sunset. this all sounds really good to me. We are coming up on the 25th and hopefully the fish will keep biting . I cannot wait to get there.

WE WERE UP LAST WEEK, SOME DAYS FISHING WAS GOOD SOME DAYS SLOW, WE NEED SOME SUMMER TO WARM LAKE UP, SO PRAY FOR WARM WEATHER AND DON’T STAY WITH SOMETHING THATS NOT WORKING, CRAWLERS WEREN’T WORKING YET, MINNOWS WORKED WELL. SOME DAYS THE FISH WERE IN THE WEEDS THE NEXT DAY THEY WERE ON THE ROCKS. BE FLEXIBLE AND YOU WILL DO GOOD.

Darryl,

We were up last week, crawlers were not working yet, but minnows did O.K., Some days were very good some days were slow. be flexible, if they are not in the weeds go to the reefs. Keep trying different approaches untill you find active fish. we caught lots of quality fish 17″ walleyes and one that was 27″ good luck

Thanks Tony… appreciate the feedback. Where were you finding the bigger fish. Any of the connecting lakes that were especially productive for you? Looks like the cold weather will continue into next week. High of 59 expected on Sunday.

Tony July 28, 2009 at 2:15 pm

Darryl,

Try the southern bays and lakes, although one day we had no luck there and went and found them on the main lake reefs. seems the warmer the day the better chance they will be biting on the main lake, as far as bigger fish we seemed to do better on the main lake.

Darryl,

If your interested in jumbo perch I would anchor in the wild rice and flip the pockets with a small jig tipped with a piece of crawler. Don’t be surprised to catch a nice walleye or two along with the pike. Last year I caught a twenty pound musky doing exactly that. The islands also should be heating up this time of year. Like Tony said, don’t be affraid to move around and try different approaches. Also don’t be affraid to ask Sharon as she knows where the fish are and has a wealth of information on how to catch them. I never leave the dock without talking to her. Sure would love to be seeing those wild rice fields now.

Thanks Richard…. Some of those jumbo perch definitely have my name on them. We can hardly wait. We leave Friday and stay overnight in Fort Francis. This is the first Canadian trip for me and my son. I’m hoping he catches so many fish that he wants to come back year after year.

Actually, it would be nice to see some fishing reports somewhere on this blog. I will post my results and hope others do the same.

Hi Darryl,

How old is your son. My son Shane was nine years old on our first visit to Pinesunset lodge. That was over six years and eleven visits ago.

Mitch and Sharon are such great hosts and the two dogs cocoa and buddy are always fun to be around. We were up there this past June and the stars must have been perfectly aligned because the weather was the best I have ever had in Canada. The fishing has always been steady but the last two years have seen a jump in the larger walleyes. This year we caught many walleyes between 18-24 inches along with some nice smallmouths up to 19 inches. The perch were scattered but we found a bunch on the last day in Little Stanawan bay on the north end. We also found plenty of small pike and these can keep your son busy during the slower periods as they seem to bite all the time.

The nice thing about this body of water is all the different water colors and neat places to fish. You can take a nice trip down to the falls or maybe sneak into Lost lake for some real quiet time fishing. My sons favorite place to fish is in Moose Bay on the south end. They also have a number of portages that we have yet to explore but will be taking advantage of in upcoming years.

The experience and memories of a first trip will most likely make him want to come back again and again.

Have a great and safe trip.

Darryl you may want to consider a one day trip to the outback lake Mcgyver with your son. I have been going to pine sunset for 12 years and we helped carry a boat into this small lake. As kids it was my brothers and My favorite lake. It is a Pike only lake a few perch but very few – only ones that hit our spinner baits. We have caught numerous 36″ plus pike but it is known for fast action. Although this year it was very tough I believe because of the cold weather we had while we were up this year. But other years we have had 50-150 fish boated in one day. It will give you that true outback Canadien adventure feeling as you have to drive about 30 minutes to get there through a clear cutting forrest. You will be the only ones on this small lake. Just troll the shorelines and cast the tackle box at them – Yellow or green spinner baits seem to work the best. The northern pike action is a great way to get kids hooked on fishing!! Also look to Muskie bay not huge fish in there usually but good action.

Dear Sharon and Mitch!

Thanks so much for the great time once again at Pine Sunset Lodge – after three years in a row – your resort is still my favorite destination in Canada!

Even though the weather was incredibly tough on the bite – I was amazed at the number of fish we caught. We found fish in the weeds as well as the rocks – if I could have spent a little more time fishing – I would have concentrated on pulling Lindy Red Devil spinners with minnows and Gulp! Alive minnows along and through the weed edges. That’s how we caught our biggest fish – but with how much I love to jig fish – it was tough to get away from that pattern.

Thanks again for such a great vacation!

Would love to hear from Chuck, Sue and Darryl on their trips to Pinesunset. The weather this year has made it difficult for sure.

Tommy,
I have the same problem year after year with that pattern. Just can’t seem to get myself to troll more. It’s still all good.

Late report but better late than never. Overall fishing was good, not great. Had our best luck in the southernmost lakes and bays. For some reason the water is a different color there. There were times where the walleye fishing was incredible. Other times, fish were a little harder to come by. We found them near weeds in 6-12 fow. and they were slamming our crankbaits (perch colored rapalas)as well as hitting jigs with minnows. We had limited action on nightcrawlers. Rock Lake also produced some of those jumbo perch.

One of our biggest walleyes, and only musky, came off the boat docks.

We had good smallmouth action on topwater baits (zara super spook jr) over weeds and near downed trees in the water. A couple over 20″. Smallie action was best for us in Turtle Bay off of Rock Lake. Water there was extremely clear.

The northerns were pretty much everywhere. They were hitting everything and pretty much became a nuisance with the bite offs.

Since this was our first trip, we were still learning the body of water. It is huge. I think we would do even better if we go back again. Mitch and Sharon were great hosts and everyone in camp seemed to really enjoy themselves.

Richard September 17, 2009 at 6:57 am

Hey Darryl! Glad to hear you had a nice trip. Like I said earlier that is one cool body of water isn’t it. Sure hope your son enjoyed the trip and now you have all those memories to draw upon and to keep you warm during the long cold winter days ahead. Looking ahead to next year can be lots of fun as my son and I always attend the All Canada Show in January to visit with Mitch and Sharon and to have one of those Walleye dinners.

I sure would like to hear what’s happening on the lake. It’s Memorial Day weekend and looking forward to going up last week of June. Last year was a little discouraging for a first timer to Dinorwic but know that it’s the place to go.
Being such a rookie it would be nice to hear some stories and out of the way places to go to while we are there.
Good Fishing to all this year.

Fishing was a little slow at the mouth of the river where you would expect to catch them this time of year.
With the unseasonably warm weather the bays have been out producing the main lake. The walleye are starting to appear on some islands but the warmer pockets in the upper 60′s have been key. Fish are being caught at 5-8 feet of water right in the weed. The weeds that are not too thick to troll or drift threw.
Some slot pike are still roaming the warm bays too. Several were caught this past week as well as many more smaller.
No problem catching a limit of nice walleye and a few jumbo perch in the mix too.
This years weather is completely opposite of last year at this time.

I’ve caught bass and walleyes using a wacky worm style of fishing.Do you think this presentation will be sucessful on your lake.

admin May 30, 2010 at 1:54 pm

Don’t see why that wouldn’t work here too.

Larry Denz June 2, 2010 at 10:17 am

In your opinion is the lake consdered clear or stained? Also, what areas
of the lake are darker in color. Thanks

John Trimbach June 14, 2010 at 11:00 am

Will be up there in ten days. How’s the fishing and better yet the weather. Hope to be able to get to some of the small lakes in the area. Any of you old timers got any advice?
